Increasing diversity in rugby
Increasing diversity in rugby As part of the Rugby Football Union’s (RFU) commitment to increasing diversity in the sport, the RFU commissioned Walnut to research experiences and attitudes towards equality, diversity and inclusion (ED&I) amongst its staff and players in elite rugby.
This sits alongside Walnut’s on-going evaluation of the RFU’s Rugby United programme, aimed at increasing participation in rugby (playing, coaching and volunteering) from those in lower socio-economic groups and people from black and South Asian groups.
We carried out an online survey, amongst players and staff in elite rugby. It explored if they had experienced discrimination, whether discrimination was being reported, and expectations of how the RFU should respond. We used behavioural science to ensure we got the highest response rate, by helping the RFU draft the email invites and follow-up reminders. QR codes of the survey were produced so that staff from the RFU could speak at events and share the survey with players to increase the response rate.
Once the research was completed, analysis was undertaken to look at how the experiences of discrimination of differs for different groups, as well as the expectations of players and staff of ED&I policies. The results were used by the RFU to inform their internal ED&I strategy, as well as create player and staff ED&I training.
