Why Apprenticeships Matter : Phoebe-Jo Balfe's Journey

Walnut Unlimited
In honour of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re excited to shine a spotlight on Phoebe-Jo Balfe, one of our amazing degree apprentices here at Walnut! Like many people, Phoebe was faced with the big decision of whether to jump into university or try something different. Choosing a degree apprenticeship has been a turning point for her, combining hands-on experience with university learning, all while developing crucial skills along the way. Phoebe’s journey has been such an inspiring one, and we wanted to share her story to show just how powerful apprenticeships can be – not just for the individual, but for the whole team.
Here at Walnut, we’ve seen first hand how apprenticeships can really change the game. As Stuart Findlay, our Head of Data Services, puts it: “Back in 2017, we decided to bring an apprentice into our team. It was a total game-changer. Simon Hales, our first apprentice, has grown so much since then. Eight years on, two promotions later Simon, is now Phoebe’s line manager, who’s been smashing it in her role. The apprenticeship scheme has been an absolute win for us!”
We couldn’t agree more. Apprenticeships give people the chance to learn while doing, combining the best of both worlds – real work experience AND a degree. It’s the kind of win-win that can really set someone up for success in a way that’s hard to match with traditional university routes.
Phoebe’s story is the perfect example of this. After taking a gap year and feeling unsure about diving straight into university, she found herself researching alternative paths and landed on the idea of a degree apprenticeship. Fast forward to today, and she’s not only thriving at Walnut but also juggling work and university in the best possible way.
We caught up with Phoebe to chat about her experience, and here’s what she had to say:
What made you decide not to pursue full-time education after college?
When I was leaving college, I found that there was so much information on degrees and universities, but I had already started working part-time and realised I didn’t want to go back into full-time education. I also discovered that I really learn better with practical experience.
How did you decide to take a gap year, and what did you do during that time?
I decided to take a gap year because I found everything a bit overwhelming. I wasn’t sure what to do, so I figured I’d work it out by the end of the year. During the gap year, I started working full-time, which made the idea of going to university seem even less appealing.
What led you to start researching alternative pathways like apprenticeships?
As the time came to make a decision, I realised I needed to look into other options. That’s when I started researching, and I came across degree apprenticeships. It sounded like a perfect fit for me, combining work with the opportunity to study at university.
What did you find attractive about degree apprenticeships?
I really liked the idea of doing an apprenticeship while also learning at university. It felt like a great way to gain hands-on experience while earning a degree, and that balance really appealed to me.
Can you tell us about your apprenticeship role at Walnut?
I landed a job at Walnut on the data services team as a degree apprentice. I study at university once a week and work for the rest of the time. It’s a great balance, and I find the experience really valuable.
How has the combination of university study and work helped your learning?
The apprenticeship has been an amazing way to learn. I find that almost everything I do at work helps boost my abilities at university, and vice versa. The practical experience directly ties into what I learn, so it feels very integrated.
What skills have you developed through your apprenticeship?
I’ve developed so many skills, especially in communication and timekeeping. The apprenticeship has really helped me grow both personally and professionally.
How do you feel about the apprenticeship scheme now?
I’m really grateful for the apprenticeship scheme. It’s been such a positive experience for me, and I’m glad I chose this path instead of following the traditional university route.
Phoebe’s recent promotion from Data Services Apprentice to Data Services Executive, is a perfect example of how apprenticeships can give you the chance to grow, learn, and work all at once. Having apprentices like Phoebe not only helps us build a great team but also helps us nurture future leaders.
As Stu says, “The apprenticeship scheme is such a wonderful initiative. Combining the working environment and daily interactions at the same time as allowing people to gain the qualifications they are looking to achieve. I would highly recommend the Apprentice approach to any young aspiring person who is looking to gain degree qualification at the same time as working in an organisation. It lets people gain qualifications while working, and it’s been a rewarding experience for both the apprentices and the team.”
Phoebe’s journey just shows that apprenticeships can open so many doors. If you’re someone who learns best by doing, this could be the perfect path for you. Plus, you get to earn while you learn -what’s not to love?
So, if you’re thinking about a degree apprenticeship or just want to know more, Phoebe’s story is a great reminder of how powerful this route can be. We couldn’t be more proud of everything Phoebe has achieved, and we can’t wait to see where her journey takes her next!
